About the event
We would like to welcome anyone aged 13-27 years old, who identify as a girl / young woman, and who live in Brent to join us for a mapping workshop afternoon.
We would like to hear what you have to say about the public spaces in your local area and bring together the voices and experiences of the girls and young women of Brent with the aim of improving the design and provision of public space. We will be thinking about questions like: Where do you go? When? Where don't you go? Why? Are there places you don't go but would like to? What would you like to see more of in your local area or the borough?
Why are we running this? Girls and young women are rarely included in planning and design processes- in the UK only 14% of the built environment workforce are women and 89% of youths in the UK have never been asked about where they live when changes happen to those local areas. Furthermore, many girls and young women in the UK express that public spaces do not feel safe enough, that they often feel left out, judged, or out of place in public space; and that there aren't any places where they feel that the design is for them specifically. We need to investigate and address this.
This workshop will be run by women residents of the borough, researchers from the London School of Economics, the advocacy group Make Space for Girls, and the Granville. It is funded by Countryside Developers.
We will be providing snacks and drinks, and please come as you are!
